The Heart of the Black Hills
Our Story
Our journey began with a simple idea: to provide quality, handcrafted goods that capture the essence of the American West. Every item in our store is chosen with care, reflecting a commitment to authentic craftsmanship and timeless design.
A Legacy Rebuilt from the Heart
Iron Creek Leather & Gifts stands at the literal doorway to Mount Rushmore, nestled along the historic 1800s wooden boardwalk of Keystone, South Dakota. Located just two miles from the monument on Highway 16a, we share more than just a block with the iconic Ruby House Restaurant and Red Garter Saloon—we share a story of resilience that has been handed down through generations.
The Spirit of Keystone
Our history is rooted in the determination of Leo Toskin, who first transformed this corner of the Black Hills in 1970. When the devastating flood of 1972 took both the original buildings and Leo’s own parents, he didn’t give up. Instead, he channeled his strength into rebuilding the entire block, honoring the spirit of the land and its people. From his extensive collection of antiques to a dedicated tribute to Chief War Eagle, Leo created a space where different cultures and histories could live in harmony.
Tradition in Every Stitch
While Iron Creek Leather officially found its home here in 2006—following in the footsteps of the former Roughriders Leather—we continue to honor the rich heritage displayed throughout our walls. When you visit us between April and October, you aren’t just shopping; you’re stepping back in time.
The Golden Roots of Crossville
The history of Keystone began in 1877 with Fred J. Cross, the area’s first permanent settler. Originally known as Crossville, the settlement was established in Buckeye Gulch, where Cross spent years mining and collecting rich gold specimens from his local properties.
